Vacational Aesthetics of the Environment, 2024
Vacational Aesthetics of the Environment (VAE) is a multimedia project that blends nostalgic representations of the past with the environmental realities of the present, exploring this convergence through the visual language of binocular and stereoscopic vision. Combining digitized 8 mm family vacation archives with contemporary imagery of climate instability and natural disasters in South Florida, the project reflects on the fragile relationship between memory, leisure, and environmental transformation.
Structured through circular framings that evoke binocular perception, the installation creates fragmented visual encounters where idyllic landscapes coexist with hurricanes, floods, environmental deterioration, and atmospheric tension. By juxtaposing archival material with digital documentary imagery, the work transforms nostalgia into a critical lens through which to examine environmental awareness and collective vulnerability.
The VAE project is composed of several interconnected works, including Vacational Aesthetics of the Environment (video installation), Still on Vacation (photographic installation), Learn to Swim (video installation), Silent Miami (experimental video installation), VAE Pop (experimental video), and The Third Eye (experimental video). Together, these works construct an immersive environment where personal archives, climate anxiety, and fragmented memory converge.
Beyond aesthetics, the project investigates the emotional and psychological intersections between human experience and environmental crisis. Through moving image, photography, repetition, and spatial installation, Vacational Aesthetics of the Environment proposes memory itself as an unstable territory shaped by both personal history and ecological transformation.
