Multimedia installation (experimental video, circular photography, site-specific layout in Morse code)

Hotel Avalon, Miami Beach No Vacancy Miami Beach Public Art Winner 2024

-- .. .- .-- -..- (MIA WX) is an immersive multimedia installation that intertwines experimental video and circular photography to explore the intersections between memory, nostalgia, and environmental realities in South Florida. The project’s unique museographic layout, based on Morse code—a visual system of dots and dashes known as “the lifesaving language”—serves both as a metaphor for urgent climate communication and as a flexible, site-adaptive structure. Words or messages related to the project’s theme can be spelled out and visually encoded in any exhibition space, reflecting both urgency and adaptability.

At the heart of the installation are video collages that juxtapose digitized 8mm home movie footage of idyllic mid-century Miami Beach vacations with contemporary video documentation of environmental threats, such as hurricanes and flooding. Circular photographs, evoking the intimate view of binoculars, punctuate the space and reinforce the dual perspective—past and present, nostalgia and awareness.

By weaving together these visual elements, -- .. .- .-- -..- (MIA WX) invites viewers to reflect on the tension between the serene, idealized memories of Miami’s past and the pressing environmental challenges of today. The work positions nostalgia not as mere longing, but as a lens through which to examine contemporary environmental responsibility. In doing so, it fosters both poetic reflection and a call to proactive, sustainable action.
